  • Dragon fly

    Price: 6,000$
We use very thin skin of the shellfish "Shiro-cho-gai" for making the wings of a dragonfly. ("Shiro" means white, "cho" means a butterfly, and "gai" equals "kai" which means a shellfish). In order to put the wings on the curved surface of a pen, a craftsman carefully and finely cut it and paste those fine pieces on the pen. This technique is called "Wari-gai".("Wari" means to break or cut). As to the body of a dragonfly, Taka-maki-e technique (the raised lacquerwork) is used for several times so as to express the three dimensional appearance in fine detail. As the finishing, the gold powder is put on and the other fine details are drawn. As the background of the dragonfly, the image of the shinning clouds at sunset is expressed on the barrel. First, "Kin-hirame" (the rough gold powder) and then the gold powder are sprinkled. Wajima maki-e artists use several colors and kinds of red ("shu") urushi such as "Aka-kuchi-shu" (deep red), "Arai-shu" (orange-red), "Nashiji-urushi" and so on. They also paint, dry and polish with their respective materials. Finally, the fine details are drawn and "Tsuyu-tama" (platinum powder) is sprinkled. A dragonfly is traditionally the insect symbolizing the victory and has the image of a good omen in Japan. The red urushi has been used for a longtime because the people respect the color as the symbol of the sun, a flame or a life.

Final target will be a human being and express a mastle of men and skin of women beautifully and realisticly. Nakaya plans to take 10 years to achieve this artwork.A motif this time is god and one step before the human being. It has taken 2 years to complete. A motif is called "Jurojin", a god of Taoism and also one of the seven gods of good fotune in Japan. This god loves "Sake" (Japanese liquer) and always brushes his long face. He carries `Maki-momo' (a scrolled documents ) and accompany with a clain which is also a symbol of long life. • Seiohbo

    Price: 40,000$
This work is completed by using the technique of "Kakiwari Maki-e" following former work Jurojin after the production period of more than one year.. The subject is "Seiohbo" ,the goddess that gives the power to confer a long life. A background of Seiohbo is Maki-e of gold powders and Kin-Hirame. (very thick gold plate.) Clouds and other part of the back ground are partly the same hight, which could be done by a conbination betwee Togidashi (polishing) Maki-e and some other techniques. The Seiohbo itself is using of Gin-yuji raising and Kakiwari Maki-e together. Kakiwari Maki-e is a technique for which only the part in the borderline paints and leaves the lacquer when the borderline is drawn. It means that to write the surroundings of a line ,but to write a line in order to express a line. This technique is so difficult, but suitable for expressing a cheek of a face and so on. The part seen in the line of the pleat etc. of clothes doesn't draw as a line but shows the line by drawing only the parts other than the line. Not like piling up highly technique called 'Taka-Makie' , 'Kakiwari' technique is very difficult to make a thin border line and takes long time.

'"Kaki-wari" is the technique to describe a line. Usually, a craftman writes one line by one writing of a brush pen. • Shuro tree

    Price: 3,700$
Shuro is a evergreen high tree of coconut clan and powerfully expanded it's leaves is feature. A scientific name is Trachycarpus fortunai. We Nakaya drew this motif in a bold composition on Piccolo model. Laeves of this tree were finished by Taka-Maki-e heaping up process in several times by silver powders and gold powders (a grip section). And we used "Akakuchi-Shu(red)" material for base coating for the first time. A vivid Shu(red) matches silver well.
*What is Akakuch-Shu? For Nakaya reguler Shu color, we use one kind of Shu material which is called ,"Nikka-shu" or "Tamari-Shu". Powders of Akakuchi-Shu melt very well to Urushi lacquer ware, on the other hand 'Nikka-shu" do not melt perfectly so thateach powders of Nikka-shu float and sink when drawing. So marks of brush tends to remain thinly, therefore, customers used to keep an artwork by Nikka-shu at a distance. However, many customers start to love because they can see the mark of writer (a touch of brush) and getting populer for these several years. This is same thing as a touch of oil pinting attracts us. Moreover, this "Nikka-shu" is smooth surface by polishing many times while an oil painting is not so. Shu color in Urushi world has so many kinds.

A "celestial maiden's robe of feathers" is one of the "Traditional entertainment series" of NAKAYA. This series have the scenes from Japanese traditional entertainments such as Kabuki, Nou and Youkyoku. A story of the "Celestial maiden's robe of feathers" is well-known to Japanese people: while a celestial maiden was bathing, leaving her robe on a tree branch, a fisherman took her robe and he was shown her dancing for return of the robe. The theme of this fountain pen is this legend of celestial maiden's robe of Miho no Matsubara (name of the beach where this story took place). About the technique "Gin-yuji" :The technique, which was invented by Nagata Yuji, a Makie technician of Kyoto in Edo era, and spread, is called "Yuji". And when silver is used with this technique it is called "Gin-yuji". ("Gin" is silver in Japanese.)
    Techniques
The robe, the main point of this picture, is drawn with the technique called "Gin-yuji". The picture is drawn with urushi and polished out the picture after sprinkling silver. With this technique the robe looks voluminous and three-dimensional but sharp. The pine trees are drawn with the technique called "Tsuke-gaki". The picture is drawn with urushi thicker than usual and sprinkle the gold. In this way pine trees look moderate compared to the robe, as if pine trees are seen in some distance. Ground and clouds are finished smoothly with "Togi-dashi Makie" technique.

  • Ryukyu Bingata 1

    Price: 4,500$
Customer's request enhanced us to collaborate with the Ryukyu Bingata dyeing method
For ladies's full dresses or traditional clothes for ritual accouterments, cloth was dyed with imprinting technique in the Ryukyu Kingdom. This is believed to be an origin of Ryukyu dying method. The Bingata dyeing method was introduced from Java, Indonesia and India and China from 14th to 15th century when the Ryukyu Kingdom was actively trading with these countries. It was also affected by Kyoto Yuzen dyeing method. Bingata naturalized various kinds of oriental culture and established its unique style expressing the rich colors of nature in Okinawa. Bingata became valuable trade goods to the Chinese Fujian market as mysterious, beautiful dye goods and it had been valued highly under the protection of the Ryukyu Kingdom since then. "Bingata" uses a lot of vivid colors and motifs in a pattern. It is stereoscopic due to "Kuma-dori" dyeing, which gives a gradation to a color. As you can see, this fountain pen is designed in the motif of "a crane and iris flowers", which is a typical design in Ryukyu-Bingata.In the original design, you can see two cranes but we put one big crane on the body of the fountain pen due to the limited space. This pen will be one of articles for presentation to a president of a certain country in the spring of 2005. In the motif of the following work of Mr.Fujisaki Makoto, an imminent writer of the Bingata dyeing method, we developed a lacquer work in fountain pen.
