NAKAYA -Equilibrium- (Balance control model)

This is Nakaya's original model. Try it out if you get the chance.

--- We at Nakaya have been studying this problem. After a continuous process of trial and error, we finally made this pen: The Equilibrium БgBalance control model". It has a mechanism called "Weight Ring" where one or more metal rings are inserted into the pen. This model has a spiral thread cut with the lathe on the whole inside of the barrel. Several weight rings can be set at any position inside the barrel, so you can adjust the weight and the balance as you want. Please click here for detail .

Five weight rings are initially supplied with the pen. (The maximum supported rings is ten. In the portable size model, nine)

If you would like more rings, one piece costs $5.

The delivery time of this model is five weeks.

The demonstration Lizard model in particular proved to be so populer that
Nakaya has added it to the regular product line. Mr. Matsubara has also polished the inside surfaces of the barrels, so they are even clearer than before!Just like the regular NAKAYA Lizard model, you can change the "tail" of this demonstrator pen and convert it to either the longer type or the shorter type in order to change its center of gravity. The tails simply unscrew loose.

Wajima-urushi nuri
An introduction to Urushi

The art of Urushi (Lacquerware) originated in the Jomon period (ca. 12,000 B.C. - ca. 400 B.C.) and is recognized worldwide as a distinctively Japanese traditional craft. Urushi has attracted worldwide attention in recent times. "Wajima-nuri" is the most famous lacquer ware producing city in Japan. The Nakaya original Wajima nuri fountain pen is carefully coated with several layers of urushi lacquer.

As known by all, PICCOLO flute is the smallest woodwind instrument.
Nakaya released has its smallest and cheapest fountain pen made of ebonite and named it PICCOLO.
A cap is screw-on type, barrel is made from ebonite.
Black Urushi lacquerware "Roiro"finsihed, a special polishing method to give the surface a mirror-like shine.
All of the Nakaya Wajima products undergo a special finishing process known as "Roiro-shiage".

The process is reserved for high class Wajima products and causes the finish to be expectionally shiny.

Due to the two-tone nib, the products as shown in above pictures will cost additional $80

A cap is screw-type. Black (Ebonite). This model has no trim and no distinction between cap and barrel.
The total length is longer than Briar Model, and is best used with the cap unposted, the same as Equilibrium Model.

All of the Nakaya Wajima products undergo a special finishing process known as "Roiro-shiage."
This process is reserved for high class Wajima products, and causes the finish to be exceptionally bright.

(Caution) As you know, the screw of Nakaya cap has four entrance in order to close a cap promptly.
On the other hand, Nakaya designs 10 aspects of a cap and a barrel of theDecapod model are flat when you close a cap.
You can make the same aspect by only one enterance of screw.
(For sealing the nib, this is no problems by using all of these four entrance of the screw. )

The Japanese name for this color is "Arai-shu".

Even among the Japanese, the origins of this name are not are not generally known. The dye in textile fabric begins to lighten after many launderings. In the past the Japanese would describe light colors with the term "arai" which means "wash." Japanese deep red is called "shu" so "arai-shu" is the most brilliant and lightest of urushi colors.

Pens that have a colored urushi lacquer finish such as "Arai-shu" and "Midori" will become even more brilliant as the urushi itself becomes more translucent with the passage of time. So the color of the pen at the time you receive it will change and improve.

In addition to our already launched "Shu" items, we added un-polished new "Shu" in the range.
Since the technique does not go through the polishing process after the paintwork is finished, it is called "self-indulgence paint".
When selecting the materials, the craftsman needs to pay very attention. THe paint becomes defective if there is any failure in paint due to the fact that there is no post-processing of paint. This is the reason why this surface is popular for a long times.
The pictures on the left show the pen with a fumigation silver clip. This fumigation silver clip costs an additional US$8/-
For the normal clips(gold ), there is no additional cost.

Traditionally, Japanese people have admired pines or evergreens as the symbol of the vitality of plants as well as immortality. The color in this photograph is a little darker than the actual product. If you are familiar with the RGB color system, this pen's color is very close to R30, G92, B22.

Pens which have a colored urushi lacquer finish such as "Arai-shu" and "Midori" will become even more brilliant as the urushi itself becomes more translucent with the passage of time. So the color of the pen will change and improve from the time you recieve it.

*Kuro-tamenuri (blackish red -tamenuri-) $460(long/portable)
"Tame" means "pool" and "nuri" refers to the lacquer coating process.
You can actually see through the layers of clear urushi lacquer as if you were looking into a pool.
Wajima artists use "shu urushi" (red color) for the base urushi on the barrel,
and "shu-ai-urushi" (mixtures of red and clear lacquer) for the finish coats.

When the process is finished, you can still see the base surface of red urushi.
After this coating process, craftsmen polish the surface over and over by hand for months in order to attain greater transparency, allowing you to clearly see the underlying red usurshi surface.

Nakaya has finally added "Heki-tamenuri " (blue/green-tamenuri) to our regular product line from our trial products.
Introduced now is the writer model (long/portable) of this color, the cigar model is also available.

Please have a look at the color of this model "Heki-tamenuri ".
"Heki" is the color between blue and green. It is one of the Japanese traditional colors.
"Tamenuri" means the technique which is the same one as Wajima artists use to make "Kuro-tamenuri " (blackish red -tamenuri-).

In the recent three years, "Kuro-tamenuri " is the most popular model at Nakaya.
Many of our customers all over the world asked us if we could make a blueish green version of "Kuro-tamenuri ".
As you might know, urushi lacquer painting doesn't have a concept of blue or bluish color traditionally. So Wajima artists need a few years to succeed in expressing beautiful bluish green just like "Kuro-tamenuri ".
The color will become more brilliant as the urushi itself becomes more translucent with the passage of time. The color of the pen will change and improve from the time you recieve it.

This is a Wajima-Urushi nuri lacquer coating blue( purple) version.
We call this color "Kikyo". Kikyo is the Japanese name of the chinese bellflower.

If you are familiar with the RGB color system,
this pen's color is very close to R40, G20, B200.

18K White Gold clip

As we know, Urushi lacquer painting doesn't have a concept of blue or bluish color traditionally. So Wajima artists use some paints to express bluish, After some process such as "Roiro", the bright color becomes a little darker, of course it will be brighter after three months because the Urushi will become clear. However, Nakaya expresses purple by maki-e method not painting in this time.
An artist must take much time in sprinkling powder and polishing it up. Since a pen barrel has steep curve, to polish(togi) especially at the top of pen barrel is very difficult. Even a craftsman who has experience does this over again and again. After some trial and error, Nakaya finally completed a beautiful Purple color. Nakaya call this purple color "Shobu".

If you are familiar with the RGB color system,
this pen's color is very close to R70, G12, B100.

"Shobu" is familiar flower among Japanese people. Traditionally, people trust a leaf of "shobu"to avoid
an evil thing, so on May 5th (Japanese children's holiday), we Japanese put these leaf into the bathtub .

This is very detailed artwork where patience is needed ,to smoothen the urushi lacquer surface.
If the surface is bumpy Togi-dashi (polishing) cannot be finished smoothly. a flat part is easy to do, however, it is very difficult when it is applied to round surface like barrels.
We apply urushi lacquer is laid thin on the surface and sprinkle gold(or silver) powder. After the powder has stiffened, coat with urushi lacquer is laid thin on the surface and fix the gold(silver) powder. Detail

Screw type cap with no band, cap, barrel and section are made of ebonite lacquered with Wajima urushi.
This model is very long and is supposed to be used without posting the cap when writing. As ebonite is a very light material it is possible to make the barrel thicker and longer. Therefore the balance point can be set easier to provide comfortable writing for everyone.
You can choose a long type and a short type.

Nakaya introduced the pen made from a briar wood from the time of our foundation. On the other hand, we were eager to release a barrel with a brilliant finishing on the surface.

We tried several methods in order to be so, but failed to keep the balance between brightness and intensity so Nakaya broke many expensive briar materials and almost gave up.

This time, the brightness and the textures of briar finished grain have been so expressed faithfully it looks like "bijoux of wood."
