As you see, a monkey
reached his long hand and tries to get the moon onthe reflection
pond. This monkey misunderstands the reflected moon as real one
and it is called "Enko-sokuen-zu". We can see this picture at
'Konchi-in' temple in Kyoto. (this picture is one of the important
Japanese culture heritages. This Fusuma-e (Japanese traditional
sliding door ) is welknown because this was drawn by Tohaku Hasegawa
(1529-1610). However the composition itself was transmitted from
old China .

Since
this original picture of a sliding door was drawn by a tiny brush
pen , Nakaya craftmen were required to describe each tiny hair by
Maki-e on the small pen barrel. It took over 6 months to
complete and deliver to the customer. Monkey's hair is brought
close to the feeling of quality of the "Sumi-e "(Indian-ink
drawing) one by one by a very detailed "Ke-bori" technique (hair
engraving).

The craftsman draws a monkey's
picture with urushi and sprinkles carbon powder. Afterwards,
rubs urushi on it and sharpens the monkey. Lastly, engraves fine
lines on a lacquered surface, rubs and polishes it.
