Housogei is painted by Chinkoku technique.
Chinkoku is a technique to put charcoal powder instead of gold and adhere it.
The entire surface including the cover is decorated with “Chinkoku”.
Housoge is an imaginary flower said to bloom in the Paradise.
It is one of the most popular arabesque patterns along with palmettes. Housoge is also depicted as a lucky pattern on a stringed instrument in the collection of the Nara Shosoin Repository.
