Cigar Long NINE DRAGONS

Based on the ink painting “Nine Dragon Scroll” (owned by the Boston Museum of Fine Arts) by Southern Song artist Chen Rong (1189-1258), the motifs, nine dragons dancing among the clouds, are designed.
Draw dragons with piling black lacquer up on the same color kuro-roiro(black) base and draw a dragon with Maki-e technique using silver powders in the center. This makes a move and expresses the dynamic dragon drawn by Chen Rong.
The black lacquer and silver powder create an ink painting-like finish.

Cigar Long WILD DRAGON

This is a popular dragon motif. Designed with the image of a Japanese dragon, with a more ferocious facial expression than ascending dragon. A jewel is held in the dragon’s hand, and a magatama, an ancient Japanese ornamental stone is inside the jewel. A dragon’s claw designed like a tomoe crest is drawn in the grip section.

Cigar Long LOVELY RABBITS

A couple rabbits motif is made based on the famous”Chojyugiga” pictures. The wife and husband rabbits are enjoying the moon in gentle atmosphere. This is the first model of mixture of 2 techniques refer to Tame-nuri. A pair of rabbits were expressed by ‘Tame-sukashi’ which is under the layer, a cloud of moon was expressed by ‘Yako-nuri’ which is over the layer.

Background of “A Tiger and Bamboo”From the ancient period, “White tiger” has been treated as one of the four gods and defending the west. It is also used as for extracting out “Five poisons” making pressure to dishonest. Tiger fighting against dragon has the meaning that power is not easy to decide on victory or defeat. Technique First of all, the base is polished with the lacquering followed by sharpening of bamboo wood and further polishing it with the lacquering . Over the polished lacquer, the main subject TIGER is drawn with the high gilted lacquer. The parts of tiger’s eyes are expressed finely with the flat lacquering. The body portion is artistically painted to bring the similar golden color shade as of real tiger expressing the sense of strongness.

Nakaya made this motif by “togi-kiri” maki-e technique with silver based lacquer ware to keep an atmosphere of an Indian ink drawing.
This artwork is the first model of “togi-kiri maki-e technique” with silver color.
