The design is based on the theme of cats enjoying the moon. The two cats and the footprints on the grip section are drawn with “Yako Maki-e” technique. The moon is drawn with “Tamesukashi” technique. The design name “Akitsushima” is another name for Japan, and “Akitsu” is the old name for dragonfly.It is designed based on an image of countless dragonflies flying in a forest at dusk. The flying dragonflies are carefully depicted one by one. Also some dragonflies are drawn on the grip section.For the base color, amber “Byakudannuri” is used to express the image of dusk.“Byakudannuri” is the technique that painting the base in black, applying a transparent lacquer such as “shuai urushi”, and sprinkling silver powder on it, then again painting the entire surface with transparent lacquer and polish to finish. So, after drawing the fox with Tame Sukashi technique, adding transparent amber lacquer to the entire surface of the motif to create a slightly plump relief shape. Then, splinkleing silver powders to the abdomen and tip of tail to express white fur. The pampas grasses are drawn with Yako Maki-e technique to give it depth.A fox footprint on the grip section with Tamesukashi technique also.

The motif is the populer dragon. This is an ascending dragon design based on an old Chinese painting, which symbolizes healthy growth of children and the fulfillment of great wishes. The motif is drawn using silver powder and paint lacquer that has transparency on it. This is the Tame-sukashi technique let motifs to be seen through. The base color is Aka-tamenuri which is vermilion base paint and Shuai-urushi (transparent amber color lacquer) on the base. A cloud is drawn in gold under the screw, and a jewel ball is drawn on the grip section using the Tame-sukashi technique.“Tame-sukashi” technique is a technique adding Maki-e taste to Tame-nuri. Drawing motifs with Maki-e on the base, and paint highly transparent Shuai lacquer. As time goes by, the top coat lacquer becomes more transparent, you can enjoy the changes to see through the ground color and maki-e.
